An indigenous community living in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania, near Kilimanjaro Mountain. They are mainly farmers and herders and live in scattered villages along the slopes of the mountain. Their way of life is very different from that of the nearby towns, as they still live traditionally and rely heavily on the land for their livelihood. Most of the Materu practice subsistence agriculture, growing mainly bananas, maize, beans, coffee and other fruits and vegetables. They also raise animals such as goats, sheep and cattle.
This community is known for its unique cultural and religious practices, including ceremonies and rituals that take place at sacred sites on the slopes of Kilimanjaro. Despite the influence of modernity, the Materu clan continues to maintain its traditions and culture strongly.
They have their own traditions and customs that have been passed down from generation to generation.
In general, the life is simple and focuses on community, teamwork and respect for nature and the land that provides their livelihood.
