Starting at an altitude of 3,500 meters, this immersive full-day trek offers stunning panoramic views of Kibo Peak, unique volcanic formations, and glimpses of rare wildlife, all without the need to summit Africa’s highest mountain.
As one of Kilimanjaro’s oldest calderas, the Shira Plateau is a UNESCO-listed zone rich in history, scenery, and adventure. From twisted lava sculptures to the distant plains of Amboseli National Park in Kenya, every step reveals something extraordinary. Whether you’re looking for a moderate high-altitude adventure or a pre-trek acclimatization, the Shira Plateau delivers an unforgettable taste of Kilimanjaro’s alpine world in just one day.
Perfect for hikers, photographers, wildlife enthusiasts, or families who want to feel Kilimanjaro beneath their boots — without the summit climb.
Your Kilimanjaro day adventure begins with a scenic drive from your hotel in Moshi to Londorosi Gate, located on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. This journey takes approximately 2.5 hours and winds through lush forest reserves where you might spot wildlife such as blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys in the treetops. Upon arrival at Londorosi, you’ll meet a professional park ranger who will accompany you during the hike. After registration, you’ll be transferred by vehicle further up the mountain to the Shira Gate at 3,500 meters, the starting point of your hike.
From here, you’ll begin your trek across the spectacular Shira Plateau, a high-altitude volcanic landscape offering stunning views of Kibo Peak, the northern glaciers, and even across to Amboseli National Park in Kenya on clear days. The hike takes you through wide open moorlands dotted with giant lobelias, dramatic lava rock formations, and the occasional signs of wildlife such as antelope or buffalo. You’ll pass unique features such as the volcanic “Cone Place” and the rugged Shira Needles while taking in the grandeur of the mountain’s vast, windswept terrain.
A packed picnic lunch is provided along the way, giving you the chance to pause, take in the views, and refuel in the fresh mountain air. The hike is moderate and can be adjusted depending on your fitness level and altitude tolerance. After approximately 4 hours of hiking, or earlier if preferred, you’ll return to the trailhead and drive back to Moshi with unforgettable memories of Kilimanjaro’s western wilderness.
