The Lemosho Route is one of the most scenic and recommended routes on Kilimanjaro. Beginning on the western side, it crosses diverse landscapes—from rainforest to alpine desert—before joining the Machame Route. Its longer duration allows excellent acclimatization, making it one of the routes with high summit success rates. Ideal for trekkers seeking beauty, gradual ascent, and strong success potential.
Known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame is popular for its dramatic scenery and adventurous spirit. It approaches from the south and offers stunning views along the Shira Plateau and Barranco Wall. Though slightly more challenging due to steeper sections, its “climb high, sleep low” profile supports good acclimatization.
Often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu is the only route that provides hut accommodation instead of camping. It follows the same trail up and down the mountain. While it is considered one of the more straightforward paths, the shorter duration can make acclimatization more challenging unless done in 6 days.
Approaching from the northern side near the Kenyan border, Rongai is quieter and less crowded. It offers a gentler gradient compared to other routes, making it a suitable option for those seeking a more gradual ascent. The landscape is drier and provides unique views of the mountain’s northern slopes.
The Northern Circuit is the longest and most comprehensive Kilimanjaro route. Completed over 8 to 9 days, it circles the remote northern slopes of the mountain, offering unmatched panoramic views and minimal foot traffic. Because of its extended itinerary, it provides excellent acclimatization and one of the highest summit success rates.
Perfect for climbers who prefer a slower pace and a more immersive mountain journey.
Known as the steepest and most direct path to the summit of Kilimanjaro. Typically completed in 6 to 7 days, this route offers a rapid ascent and is considered one of the most challenging options on the mountain. It approaches from the southern side and quickly gains altitude, providing dramatic scenery and a true wilderness feel. Due to its demanding nature and shorter acclimatization profile, Umbwe is best suited for experienced trekkers who are confident in their fitness and prepared for a more intense climbing experience.
